Hayden targeting Champions Trophy

It’s no secret that Australia plays cricket with the sole intention of winning. The Aussies are the current holders of the ICC Cricket World Cup as well as the ICC Champions Trophy, which is held once every two years. Star opener Matthew Hayden, who has the distinction of being a member of Australia’s two successful World Cup campaigns (2003 and 2007) however, did not feature in his country’s Champions Trophy triumph in 2006 on account of an injury. And perhaps, it is the lure of the Champions Trophy which still eludes his trophy cabinet that might propel him to travel to Pakistan provided his security is assured. “We're on the eve of competing in what is known as the second World Cup. We don't want to walk away, as it's a tournament that we would like to win. So, I would certainly want to be involved in the competition if it means that my safety is not compromised," he told the Sydney Morning Herald. Hayden remains confident despite a slow recovery from ankle tendonitis that forced his early return from the mid-year tour of the West Indies. Shane Watson and Shaun Marsh were Australia’s openers during the five-match ODI series in West Indies which was the team’s first outing after Adam Gilchrist’s retirement earlier this year. The southpaw underwent a few scans last week which cleared him of muscular damage but he's been told to tone down his rehab. Following a security briefing in Dubai on Sunday, the ICC board has said it would wait until Thursday to make a final decision on Pakistan's status as hosts.
